Too Little Too Late (August 2012)

Unfortunately Peter could not spend the whole day with Serena. He had to get reacquainted with his life. He took a cab to his Aunt May’s house and he was so pleased to see how well she was doing and how young she looked. He then had to go to OsCorp to relearn what he needed to learn in order to run the R & D department.

Tony and Isabella had returned from their visit with Rhodie and a bit of shopping. Tony knocked then came into Serena’s room. She was watching TV and looked kinda bored just laying there. Tony frowned with he looked at her. “I thought You and Peter were supposed to hang out today?” He asked.

A few days had passed since that wonderful day earlier in the week. Unfortunately, since then she and Peter had only been able to talk on the phone. Peter was pretty busy getting this new life figured out. Serena missed him and she found she didn’t want to go into the lab without him. She had been accepted back into the Master’s program and Peter was working on getting her on his team at Osborn Corp.

That afternoon she was in her room just watching some tv. She couldn’t stop thinking about Peter and, although she thought about Gambit too, she didn’t think about him quite as much as she was about Peter. She talked to Gambit, but he still seemed angry and upset.

She looked over at her father when he stepped into her room. “We were but he had to cancel. He’s been pretty busy at Osborn Corp.”

Tony of course was pleased to hear that things were progressing but he could tell just by how mopey she was being that she missed Peter. He decided that he’d invite him over for dinner tonight. He really wanted this thing with him and Serena to work and it sounded as if things were progressing.

Tony moved and sat on Serena’s desk. He took a moment to look around her room. “Well you can invite him over for dinner tonight if you want. Your mother’s making Lasagna,” he said. “I understand why he did what he did. And I also understand why my counterpart helped him. I’d do anything for my baby,” Tony said affectionately.

Serena liked the idea of inviting him over for dinner. She could tell her father liked him, but perhaps that wasn’t so surprising considering that they were married in this other life and appeared to have had a close relationship.

“Do you have any memories from the other life?”

“I do but only when he’s close to me. To us. The Tony on the other side used your DNA and so the more you are with him, the more you will remember and unlike us, those memories will not fade. I can’t really explain why any of this works as it does but no one has ever attempted anything like this before,” Tony said. “Some kind of...cellular imprinting...at least that’s what he said. But...but he said he didn’t want to rely on that to forge his relationship with you. He wanted to build it naturally. I’m not certain how natural any of this is but you appear to like him. And we’re encouraged by that,” he said. He included Isabella in that as well.

Serena listened to what her father said and nodded. She liked that Peter was wanting to get to know this version of herself and build their relationship naturally. She couldn't guarantee that she would be exactly like the Serena he had been married to, but he seemed to like her quite a bit and she liked him.

"I do really like Peter and I feel a connection to him that I have not felt with anyone else before, but I just don't want to hurt Gambit. I do love him too."

Tony raised an eyebrow at her but said nothing about that. She’s have to figure out who she wanted eventually and she knew full well who he was pushing for though Gambit had saved Isabella’s life recently.

“I’m just glad you’re not jumping into getting married. You’re young Serena. You have years to think about that. You don’t have to be married to someone to be a couple,” Tony said. He wasn’t one of those dads that thought that one should get married if they intended on becoming intimate with someone. In fact he thought she should experience life a little more before settling down.

“Have you seen Gambit since you’ve been back?” Tony asked.v

Serena sighed and shook her head when her father asked her if she had seen Gambit since they got back. “No, I’ve talked to him on the phone, but he seems pretty angry and upset still. I’m not really sure what I’m doing. I do love him, but I think Peter and I have a stronger connection. He and I have more to talk about and I can work with him in the lab. I just don’t want to hurt Gambit.”

“Well that’s your business,” Tony said. “I’ll talk to you later,” he said then stepped out. When Serena called Peter he said he would love to come to dinner, especially if Isabella is cooking. And he did say that he would love it if Serena put her hair up for him tonight. This was something from the older Peter, the more confident Peter who liked it when Serena did things he asked her to do. They were never really anything complicated. Just things like putting her hair up or putting on a dress he liked.

He told her he was in a dark gray suit with an off white shirt. He had come straight from the lab and on the phone he told her he had a surprise for her.

Needless to say everyone in the tower was amused by Serena’s activities. Isabella had asked her to help with dinner but she hadn’t come out yet and she knocked and opened the door to her room. “Serena? I think you’re overthinking this ‘what to wear’ moment,” she said with a chuckle. “I think Peter will love whatever you put on,” she said and decided to come all of the way in. There were dresses all over the bed and several hung up where ever a hanger could hang. She moved toward the bathroom. “Serena?” She called from the bedroom.

Serena had worked herself up trying to figure out what to wear. She would put something on and then almost immediately take it off after looking at herself in the mirror. The result was a massive pile of discarded dresses on her bed. She had many beautiful dresses, but she just didn’t know what Peter would like. She had put her hair up, as he had requested, but when it came to the dress she just began to doubt herself.

She sighed when she heard her mother come in. Serena had said she was going to help her with dinner, but she hadn’t finished getting dressed yet. “I just don’t know what he would like. He knows me better than I know myself and now I’ve gotten myself so confused over what to wear.”

Isabella came over and looked at her. “Well, I doubt he is looking for anything too fancy Serena. How about something dress casual?” She said as she began looking around the room at all the dresses.

“And it’s summer, fall so maybe a nice top and a skirt,” she said and found a light, summer dress angled at the bottom. It was tasteful though it did dip in the front enough to show a little something. Isabella brought it over and set it in front of her and then lifted her hair up.

“Well that looks nice, want me to do your hair?” She asked. “And longer earrings,” she said.

Serena put on the dress and let her mother do her hair. She put it up into a slightly messy French twist, which was one of Isabella’s signature hairstyles. She put on the earrings her mother suggested and then a little bit of perfume. Little did she know that she had actually chosen Peter’s favorite.

“I’m just worried. He was in love with this other Serena, but what if for some reason I’m different and he doesn’t like me?”

“Serena the man has come a long way just to be with you. I know when a man is into me and I think you know Peter is into you. He seems like a sweet young man but there is something in his eyes. I think I believe he is who he says he is,” Isabella said.

“You deserve love Serena but don’t lose yourself in this,” she warned. “You should accomplish what you want to accomplish,” she said. “I don’t know if Peter will push or not but if he does, you’ll either push back or yield to him,” she said. “Just be certain that it’s what you really want,” she said.

Kate ducked her head in. “He’s here!” She said warningly. Isabella took one last look at Serena. “Your beautiful, now go get em,” she said smiling at her.

Serena listened to her mother and nodded slightly. What she said made sense to Serena. She had a lot of things that she wanted to accomplish in her life and she needed to be her own woman, even if she was in a relationship. It was that way for her parents. Both her mother and father were well known for their own accomplishments, but they were also known together for other things. No matter what man she ended up with, Serena needed them to understand and support that.

She looked over at Kate as she popped her head in and announced Peter had arrived. Serena took a deep, steadying breath before walking out to greet him. She smiled when she saw him. He looked quite handsome in his suit. “You clean up nicely.”

Peter brought the pink wrapped package with him and he held it under his arm as he came off the elevator. Steve Logan and Natalya waved at him from the living area and he saw Serena exit her room and stepped toward him: she was beautiful! He thought.

He smiled and leaned in and kissed her right on the lips in front of everyone. That same, soft kiss where his lips touched hers with an intense warmth without one hint of aggression or roughness. “And you Serena, look fantastic,” he whispered and kissed her cheek. When he did he took in her scent.

“I brought something for you.” He said and handed her the present. When she opened it he smiled. It was a lab coat with her name on it and an OsCorp security badge.

“One of my team officially withdrew from the program, you’re in Serena, you’re going to work for OsCorp,” he said excitedly. “When I spoke to Norman and told him who you were he waived the interview altogether. It’s all up to you now,” Peter said happily.

Serena blushed at Peter’s compliment and smiled warmly at him. He did not seem hesitant to kiss her in front of everyone, although she guessed he would be used to it since he came from a life where they had been married.

She grinned when she saw the wrapped gift. She took it from him and opened it. Her eyes widened when she saw it was an Osborn Corp. lab coat and name tag. She became extremely excited and she smiled at Peter. “Yes, I want to do it.”

And so it was that they all sat down to dinner together. Peter spoke of how the conversation with Norman went and how eager he was to get Serena Stark back into his lab even though what happened. The work they were going to do was cutting edge and Serena’s coding abilities were sorely needed on the project.

“So Serena, all your class credits will be covered by OsCorp,” Peter said as they began to pass around the food. Isabella filled wine glasses and then sat down next to Tony. “Full benefits, the whole shebang. I’ll take you to Deborah our HR lady and she’ll get you all situated,” Peter said. He knew full well she didn’t need any of that but it was her independence though he never said it directly.

“Well I for one cant wait to see what you all come up with,” Tony said and Peter and Serena shared a secret smile about that. “Oh my god, Mrs. Stark, this is amazing,” Peter said when he tasted the lasagna.

Serena was excited about getting started. She had a good feeling about working with Peter. She already thought they made a good team. Although she enjoyed teaching, she wanted to get back into working hands on in the science and technology industry.

Isabella liked Peter. She got a good, warm feeling from him. He seemed like he had a good heart and she could tell by the way he looked at Serena that he loved her and would do anything for her. Suddenly, an odd feeling came over her and a memory of a sad event came flooding back into her mind.

...It was just four days after Serena’s death and Isabella was preparing for her daughter’s funeral. Peter had barely come out of the room he and Serena had shared. Serena’s death had greatly affected him and late at night she would hear him crying as she walked by the room. She stepped into his room and found him sitting on the bed just staring out into space. He had not even started to get dressed for the funeral. She slowly walked over to him and reached out and gently touched his hand.

“Peter, are you alright?”

Peter trembled was he recalled what he had done. He had killed Serena, with his own hand. Even knowing what was at stake, what was really happening didn’t make what he did right in his mind. He looked up at Isabella with tears that streamed down his cheeks.

“She’s gone,” he said as his lips trembled. “She’s gone and all the light, all the warmth I ever saw or felt is gone with her,” he said.

Isabella sat down on the bed next to Peter and she took his hand into her own and looked at him. "Peter, you did what Serena needed you to do...what she wanted you to do. It would have been so much worse watching Nyx using Serena's body to destroy the world," she said as tears came to her eyes. "Serena loved you so much Peter. She will always be with you."

...The memory ended and Isabella looked over at Peter. She remembered the mother/son relationship that she had with him and how much joy he had brought to their lives. He had been a wonderful father and husband. She gave him a soft smile at his compliment on her lasagna and knew from memory that it had been one of his favorites. "I'm glad you like it Peter."

“So everyone here knows that I’m Spider-Man. I would still appreciate it if that secret was not revealed,” Peter said. This was the first time since the incident that Natalya came to war with the rest of them. No one addressed her though. As they abided by what Logan asked. Peter has not really agreed but he didn’t really know this Natalya either so he did not say anything to her.

“I’d also eventually like to train and perhaps join the Avengers as well,” Peter said. “Well I think that can be arranged,” Steve said in between bites. Tony took another sip of wine as he looked at Peter. “So you live with your Aunt May?” Tony Asked. “Yeah, it’s just us and she lives on a fixed income so I help her out financially and doing things around the house,” Peter said. He took a bite from the Lasagna. “Well, is there anything we could do?” Tony asked and Peter shook his head. “No thank you, This work at Osborn Corp. it pays well and I’d really like to just make it on my own,” Peter said. “We’ll be alright,” he said as he looked at Serena. He smiled when she looked back at him.

Serena had not seen the odd look Peter gave Natalya as she had been pouring a little more wine for herself. She took a sip and looked over at Peter when he mentioned that he would like to train and join the Avengers. She looked over at her father. "If Peter gets to train and join then I want to as well," she said with a little smile. Her father had been pushing back against letting her train and join the team. She wanted her own suit and hoped he would finally give in.

Serena knew about Aunt May. Peter had told her about his aunt during their talks on the phone. She knew that he cared very deeply for her and was quite close to her. Serena appreciated that Peter did not want to take a handout from her father. The fact that he wanted to earn his way in the world said a lot to her. When he looked at her she gave him a little smile. She reached under the table and took his and and gave it a little squeeze.

Peter silently thanked Serena for taking his hand. She made him feel at home here though the others did as well to some degree. After dinner Serena took him out onto the terrace. It was a beautiful evening, the half moon was pale and bright and the stars twinkled down at them. They both carried their glasses of wine and they looked out over the balcony to the city below.

“If I overstepped with the job you can tell me Serena. The positioned opened up and I just reacted,” Peter said. He didn’t want Serena to think he intended on running her life. He knew from experience that she was an independent woman who hated it when she felt coddled or corralled into something. They turned to face one another and he decided tonight he would follow her lead.

Serena walked with Peter out onto the balcony where they could be alone. She sipped her wine and looked over at Peter when he asked if he had overstepped with the job. "No, you didn't overstep. I could have turned it down if I wanted to. It was an incredible opportunity and I'm just glad you thought of me for that position."

They slowly turned to face each other and Serena set down her glass of wine. After Peter did as well, she stepped up to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. Their lips met and she closed her eyes as her body pressed up against his.
