The Thin Line Between Good and Evil

Sabella wasn't sure how to respond to Nathan's accusation towards her father. She began to shake her head, but he continued on. This was a shock to her. She didn't want to believe it, and yet she began to suspect what he was saying might be true. She was quiet for a while before finally responding.

"He saved me," she said softly. "He kept me safe and gave me a home here. He was the father I had always wished for. He was understanding and kind and gave me a life I could have only dreamed of. My real father beat me and tried to rape me. I believe that what you are saying is true...but it's still hard for me. I feel loyalty to you both...but you are my husband. I married you freely. That was my decision and it is one that I will never regret. I stand by you."

Nathan listened and he did appear to relax as she spoke. As far as he was concerned though he wasn't certain he could trust her to do what he needed her to do if the Oracle told her different. He’d need to take steps for that. Steps he knew she wasn't going to like at all.

“Sabella...l do love you and if there is a way we can survive this of course I would want that. We’ve lost so much...and we have so much to fight for. And I intend to fight, never think that I do not. But if it comes to us winning or me surviving I also know what I would want and what I will do,” he said with eyes that stared into hers so deeply the rest of the world might as well not existed.

“Perhaps you need to speak to him,” he said finally as he got off of her. And who he meant was obvious considering their conversation. He only needed doubt to enter into their relationship and then that would be that...he hoped.

Sabella was relieved to know that Nathan was going to fight to survive and not just accept what he was told was going to happen. She needed to hold out hope that he was going to live through this and that they would be together still in the end. She sighed when he suggested that she speak to The Oracle herself. To be honest, she wasn't sure she wanted to know the answer. It might mean her losing someone else who meant everything to her. She was quiet for a moment before responding.

"I will speak to him....but Nathan, at the very least I want you to understand how difficult this is for me. He means a lot to me. He's become my father."

Nathan sighed and shifted to lay beside her on the bed. He had never known his parents. Not even a scrap of memory existed for him. What would it be like to have family? He couldn’t even imagine. Everyone he had tried to connect with in that way had died. He stroked her hair and sifted his fingers through it as he looked at her.

“I’m not certain people like us can even have families. We end up hurting them or getting them hurt. I don’t know if I could leave now...that we are together,” he said softly. He was speaking of what happened to Myrna. It took just one person to believe they saw something and then it's a mob with torches and pitchforks ready to burn them alive. Unlike the people at the estate, Nathan lived alone for a long time, much longer than anyone else. He was one of the oldest, besides The Oracle.

“It is an odd thing to live in fear but that was the cost of freedom and life. Albereth...i think...believes that the oracle will give her the answers she seeks and the ability to stop living that way. But she’s wrong. She can not see that for every action there is always a reaction and the Oracle can’t foresee what does not affect him. He can make educated judgements perhaps but he’s not truly omnipotent. You must have learned that by now,” He continued and then rolled over onto his back to look up at the ceiling.

To say their relationship was odd was an understatement. As angry as 2 cats in a sack one moment and then as tender to one another as two lovers who hadn’t seen one another in weeks, the next.

Sabella began to relax as she felt Nathan run his fingers through her hair. It was hard to believe that only moments ago they were yelling at one another. Their relationship certainly wasn't conventional...not that Sabella would want it to be. A conventional marriage sounded boring to her. And why should they have a normal marriage when they weren't even living normal lives? Something Nathan said, however, caught her ear and she looked at him.

"Well, if you don't believe he is omnipotent then why should you believe that you are going to die?"

Nathan’s hand paused in the middle of his stroking when he heard what Sabella had said. It was a valid question, one he would have preferred not to answer but decided that instead of blowing up at her again so he didn’t have to that he’d just say it out plain to her. “Because if I know..if I believe I’m already dead, I can stop worrying about it. I’ve made peace with the fact that I will likely die. And it allows me to focus on ‘other’ things,” he said as if he didn’t wish to elaborate.

“And then there is the other…” He said but hesitated. He knew how strong her relationship was with The Oracle and he didn’t want to drive a wedge into it but she had asked and she deserved an answer. “My death affords him a way to continue to live and or not be captured. Which doesn’t really change anything for me. I will still do what I think I need to to win this. But maybe the distinction matters to you,” he whispered as he shifted to speak into her ear. His hand also shifted and drew down the side of her robe until he pulled on her robe tie. Her robe fell back to expose her and his hand moved down between her legs. It was odd that he can be facing the prospect of not coming out of this alive and yet want to pleasure her right then.

OOC-I think that only makes, sense, she needs to ask some hard questions I think and she is not going to like what those answers are either.
