Ranik and Kaia had a long talk about their daughter and what they were going to do if they both survived. Dathomir was no joke but Ranik would not leave her again and he would not leave her to fight this fight alone. He hated Darth Maul as much as she did but he did not want to lose Kaia. Beyond Maul, beyond everything there was the Nightmother who wanted Kaia. Wanted her body. Ranik did not like the sound of that. Luckily though they had a long trip and having Kaia back, having her all to himself, Ranik planned on availing himself upon her.

Ranik shifted off of Kaia and rolled over onto his back. He panted and wiped sweat from his forehead. “You could have taken a holo vid or at lead a holo pic of Rayna. I wonder what she looks like...whose eyes does she have?” he asked. “Does she have your cute ears and nose too?” He asked.

Kaia was worried about going to Dathomir. She knew the dangers that lurked there. She had been avoiding going anywhere near the planet ever since she learned about the prophecy from her father, but she could not avoid it any longer. She would not allow Darth Maul to hurt anyone else that she loved. Kaia had missed Ranik and it was clear in bed that he had missed her as well. Their love for one another flowed through the Force and it gave her hope for their future.

Kaia's body glistened with sweat after their passionate love making. She was trying to catch her breath and looked over at Ranik when he complained that she didn't have a holo video or a holo picture of Reyna. "When I realized you were being tortured, my first thought wasn't to take a holo video or picture of Reyna," she replied with a little smile. She then turned over onto her side to look at him. "She has your eyes, but I'm not certain what makes one's ears 'cute'."

Ranik turned onto his side and with his hand he light brushed back Kaia’s damp, red hair to expose her ear. He touched the edge of her ear with his fingers. “Like these ears...I think they’re cute,” He said then tapped her nose. “And your nose too,” he added with a grin. Kaia in her nakedness was extremely beautiful and only now did he wonder if they kept on like they were, if she’d get pregnant again? Well, if she did get pregnant, she’d not be fighting, would she? He thought. That made him smile and he rested his hand on her hip and his head on his elbow.

“So, what comes after Dathomir? You seem to have done alot of planning if you dont survive, but what if you do? The war is just getting started,” he reminded her.

Kaia couldn't help but smile when Ranik touched her ear and her nose. Being with him like this she was able to temporarily forget about what she was about to face and what she was risking. In moments like these she was able to just focus on the love she felt for Ranik and that he felt for her.

She sighed a little as she considered Ranik's question. "To be honest, I have not thought about it. For now, I'm not sure I can...not when my mind is so filled with what is coming."

Just then Hark ducked his head into their room. “Sir, when you’re done...There is a priority message for Kaia,” he said when they both got up he looked at her. “Ya know, I think Asena’s breasts were nicer,” he said rudely. “Her hips too,” he said as he looked at Kaia’s nakedness. Ranik didn’t respond to that he only hopped into a pair of pants and buckled his belt as he moved into the hallway.

When Kaia finally arrived, the message beeped annoyingly. Ranik was glad she didn’t send him away while she activated it. When she did, Mace Windu’s hologram came on.

“Kaia, we’ve lost alot of Jedi. And the chancellor has been given special governing powers. He’s decided to employ a clone army to fight these separatists. Please return to the temple as soon as possible,” he said then his hologram ended. Ranik said nothing but he rubbed his chin.

Kaia was used to Hark's rudeness and she simply rolled her eyes, but didn't respond. She had long since learned that responding to him was useless. However, she did look at Ranik as they both got dressed. "You know, you could have programmed him to be nicer."

Kaia wondered who the message could be from. She was bonded to Reyna through the Force and she knew she was still alive and well, so it couldn't be from Eeth. She finished dressing and then walked down to meet Ranik. She activated the message and watched as Mace Windu's hologram appeared. She listened to the message and as it ended she sat back and decidedly did not look at Ranik. She knew what she was about to say he was not going to like.

"If I survive this fight on Dathomir then I must return to the temple. I cannot sit by and do nothing while this war continues."

Ranik turned to face her and his face took on an irritated look. “What is it with you and Maul? Its not very Jedi-like to go after someone because of revenge. One of the most basic elements of tactics is to not let your enemy dictate the battlefield. Darth Maul has been leading you by the nose since he killed Zavian,” he said and looked at her a moment before he continued.

“Maul wants to turn you and Talzin wants to possess you. Tell me why going to Dathomir is a good idea again?” He asked sarcastically.

Kaia felt all the contentment from their recent love making leave her body. Her body became tense as she listened to Ranik. Something about the tone of his voice irritated her.

"Because if I don't kill Maul he will just continue to come after us and we have a daughter to protect now too. What would you have us do instead?"

Ranik’s brow furled into a doubtful glare. “You’re letting your fear and anger guide your actions. You sound like...like a Sith Kaia. I doubt Zavian would approve of this,” he said but he saw the stubborn look in her eyes. “I’m not saying I won’t go, I will go, and I will do everything I can for us both to get out of this alive. “I just think its a mistake,” he said then turned forward and hit a few buttons on the console in front of him. The ship was still in hyperspace toward Dathomir.

Kaia was visibly hurt when Ranik said she sounded like a Sith. That hurt her worse than anything else he could have said to her. She wanted this fight with Maul to be over. She didn't want to have to worry about him and if she was going to hurt another person she loved. She wanted to just turn away from Ranik and let the ship continue on towards Dathomir. She tried to turn away, but Ranik's words echoed in her head. She sighed out of frustration and turned back to the console and suddenly entered in new coordinates...for the Temple. She didn't say anything to Ranik as the ship slowed out of hyperspace and made the necessary adjustments. She just walked away and went to go be alone for a little while.

Ranik just sighed as he watched her go in an angry huff. He often had that affect on people but he honestly thought he was right. He felt...something from her that concerned him though he could not explain what or why. Later that night she had not come to bed. He didn’t know the time but when he opened his eyes he saw her just standing there looking down at him. It was very dark in the cabin but he could see her pale flesh from the dim lighting from the hallway.

“You were thinking of getting into your ship and going anyway, weren’t you?” He asked softly. “Why don’t you take your clothes off and get into bed? I want to feel your skin against mine,” he said but she'd know by now that, if she joined him, eventually he’d make love to her again. If not tonight, in the morning. They were just a bit more than a day from Coruscant. And then there might not be a chance to be with him there. Depending on how things went with the Jedi council, there might not be a chance again.

Kaia found a quiet place on the ship to meditate. She just needed to clear her head and think. She had touched the Dark Side of the Force in order to defeat Darth Maul and during that time she had felt balanced, but now she felt...off. Perhaps Ranik could sense that. She knew he was right of course about going after Darth Maul, but that only made her feel more frustrated.

Eventually she got up and just began to wander around the ship. For a brief moment she thought about getting into Eeth's ship and going to Dathomir, but that thought was only brief. She sighed and walked down to Ranik's cabin. She stood there watching him as he slept. She wasn't sure how long had passed, but slowly he became aware of her presence and he opened his eyes. She heard his request and she hesitated a moment before getting undressed and climbing into bed next to him. He wrapped his arms around her and as he did she felt tears come to her eyes.

"You and Reyna are all I have. I cannot lose either of you...not like I lost Zavian."

“Maul will not know you have a child. And he will not try anything if you’re amongst the Jedi. You wounded him and now he knows he will not be able to turn you. Not without help. So we can not allow him to pick where your next duel is,” He said softly. He kissed her neck and basked in the added warmth of her body next to him.

“Zavian would not ask you to avenge him Kaia. And I was wrong for leaving. I know that now. I just didn’t want to get hurt again. We’ve both suffered loss so maybe if we stick together…” he said but didn’t finish that thought. He knew she’d know what he meant.

“I love you Kaia and no matter what. I will watch your back,” he said as he nuzzled her neck.

Kaia lay there for a moment before speaking softly. "I don't know what I would do without you Ranik. When Zavian died I felt as if my heart would never heal...that I would never love again. But then you came into my life and changed everything for the better. I was lost after Zavian died, but you've helped to keep me on track. I love you."

Ranik had no issue finding a landing pad. But he also didn’t have to think why. So many Jedi had died in the battle on Geonosis that there were alot of empty pads. Ranik could feel Kaia’s uneasiness and he reached over and squeezed Kaia’s hand. There was no one on the pad to escort them and Ranik felt a bit uneasy himself coming back.

The temple guardians knew who Kaia and Ranik were and they did not try to stop them from entering the temple. Once they were inside Mace Windu along with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker and a young Togruta Ranik had never seen before.

“Kaia Aldari, it is good to see you,” Obi-Wan said. They had been talking when Kaia and Ranik came in. Mace looked at them as Obi-Wan spoke. “I am...troubled to learn Darth Maul is still alive. Would you happen to know where he went after his defeat?” He asked. All eyes were on her then.

Kaia had not been back to the Temple in three years and she had disregarded the Jedi's instructions to return there after Zavian's death. Although she had been asked to come back, she wasn't entirely sure how welcome she was going to be. Thankfully, Ranik would be there with her.

Seeing the landing pads so empty was upsetting to Kaia, as it only served as another reminder of all of the Jedi who had recently died. She and Ranik were not stopped from entering the Temple and as they walked in they were met by Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, his apprentice, and someone she did not recognize.

"We strongly believe he fled to Dathomir. We were on our way there when we received your message."

As Kaia looked at the group before her, her eyes fell upon Anakin and the feeling she got from him made her feel...uneasy.

Just then a small, green skinned Jedi Master hobbled slowly into the room from one of the side corridors. Everyone in the room stopped what they were doing and stopped what they were about to say toreard Master Yoda as he came up to them.

“So, come you have, heed our earlier requests to come earlier...you did not,” he said as he eyed Kaia. ranik might as well not even existed. “Odd company you keep Jedi Knight,” he said as his gaze shifted to Ranik. He felt Ranik’s strength in the force. Not so strong as the others there but it was there. “The Jedi council has need of you Kaia, there are many padawans without a Jedi to train them. “It is good you’ve come back,” he said as he looked up at her.

“Does she have one already? He seems too old?” Ahsoka said out of turn. She was young, everyone could see that and inexperienced in proper etiquette. Obi-Wan grinned at that question though. Anakin did not and he frowned at her. At seeing his frown Ahsoka lowered her head and suddenly wished she had not spoken.

“Forgive Ahsoka Kaia, she often speaks her mind without thinking,” he said. Mace Windu said nothing but his eyes did shift to Ranik. Yoda’s eyes did as well.

“Why is everyone looking at me?” Ranik asked now finally feeling uncomfortable.

Kaia looked over at Master Yoda as he slowly came into the room. She heard what he said, but she did not respond immediately. She suddenly saw everyone's eyes shift to Ranik as Master Yoda's did. Kaia knew that Ranik had strength in the Force, but up until now training him to use the Force had not been something she had considered.

She glanced at Ranik when he asked why everyone was looking at him. "It is because you have some strength with the Force." She then looked back at the rest of the group. "Ranik is not currently my apprentice, although I could train him. However, I cannot remain here. I am needed elsewhere...by my...our...daughter. She is just four months old. I cannot simply abandon her."

Ranik looked at them like they were speaking a language he did understand. ‘Train him as a Jedi? What were they talking about?’ He was about to say so when Kaia spoke about their baby. The Jedi did not seem surprised.

“Need you here, we do as well Kaia,” Yoda said. And Obi-wan nodded. Mace had a constant frown on his face. “Further and further away from the Jedi code you travel Kaia. The further you go, the closer you get to the dark side,” he said. “Will she turn to the dark side?” Obi-Wan asked. Yoda closed his eyes for a few moments as he tried to see.

“Mmmm, unable to see, her future is” he said. “But Master Windu is right. The code protects you from yourself Kaia. Live it or closer to the dark side you can be led,” he said.

Kaia sighed and glanced at Ranik before looking back at the rest of the group. She was slightly surprised by their lack of reaction to her announcement that she had had a baby with Ranik, but they also knew that she was not traditional in terms of the Jedi Code by any stretch of the imagination. Perhaps, though, she had strayed too far. Perhaps it was time for her to come back and re-immerse herself in the Light Side of the Force.

"Alright, I will bring Reyna here and I will train Ranik in the ways of the Force. Is this acceptable?"

Windu looked at Yoda and Yoda looked up at him. He gave a slight, withering nod. They were desperate, Ranik noticed. One more Jedi when they were so few was a big deal. “Very well,” Windu said but it was obvious reluctance.

As the all began to break apart, Obi-Wan Kenobi stopped her to talk. He smiled at her. “Like my old master, Qui-Gin, You and Zavian are unconventional. You choose not to follow the code. Why?”

Kaia was glad that they had agreed to her conditions. Otherwise, she would not have remained at the Temple. Her daughter needed her and she would not abandon her. As the group began to break up she saw Obi-Wan step up to her. She liked Obi-Wan Kenobi. In many ways he was far more conventional regarding the Jedi Code than she, but he had always been nice to her.

"I feel that the Jedi must change in order to survive. Following the Jedi Code so strictly has caused nearly the extinction of the Jedi. I believe in the ways of the Jedi, but I will not deny myself love or happiness. Zavian brought me happiness and now so does Ranik and Reyna."

“Curious,” Obi-wan said. “The code exists so that Jedi are not pulled to the dark side. Our emotions and ties can betray us, force us to react in ways that could lead us down the wrong path. The first among us that turned are the reason we have the code. I know it is a hard life but Anakin has told me some things he’s heard about you. Your parents and brother...are Sith?” he asked.

Kaia said nothing, but her opinion of the strict Jedi Code remained unaltered. She glanced over towards Anakin when Obi-Wan mentioned that his padawan had heard things about her. She looked back at Obi-Wan and nodded. "Yes, my parents and brother are Sith. Both my father and my brother have tried to persuade me to join them, but I am not going to let that happen. Just because my family are Sith that doesn't mean that I will turn as well."

"Kaia, how long can you ignore that you have become more vulnerable? You are a powerful Jedi. Think what could happen if you were turned? What if your child was taken or Ranik? By creating connections, ties, family, you endanger yourself and by extension, all of us," he said and then he stretched out his feelings toward her. Anakin's expression changed as well.

"You've 'touched' the dark side, haven't you?" He asked softly.
