The Healing Begins

Post by Conleth on Wed Sep 28, 2016 7:13 pm

Everyone appeared to take what Nauriel had said to heart and the girls walked on eggshells besides. Another full day in the coach was enough to put anyone in a foul mood but he knew that Nauriel was really concerned about her mother. He tried to assure her that if she were in danger that her father would have said so but it hadn’t seemed to of helped. He urged her to eat and took the baby when she wanted to go walk or be alone. The girls still bickered but they were much more circumspect about it when Nauriel was nearby. That's pretty much how it went from sun up to sun down and their bottoms were all sore after the 6th day. On the 7th they could see the wooden palisade and walls of Gehenna. Soldiers wearing the livery of Lord Phelan escorted them in and very near the gate is where nearly everyone had gathered. They waved, shouted, hooted and hollered at them as their coaches slowly strode by. A people happy and pleased to have their Royal family visit their quaint little village though not so quaint nor little these days. The coaches continued toward the manor, the small cobbled road only barely able to contain the teams of horses that pulled them. Finally the coach pulled around the large, curved courtyard and the coach lurched to a halt. Elessar hadn’t waited for the footman he could tell Nauriel would jump out if he didn’t just take care of the door and step himself. The doorman looked horrified and clam outed to help s Elessar held her hand to assist her out with Elfwine tucked tightly in his basket she managed with her other hand. Lord Conleth along with many of his household were there waiting for them. He wore a long coat of dark red and gold, his hair tied back in a long braid. He bowed to them but held no expression on his face that he could discern anything anyway. Nauriel would though. She’d see a grim caste to him that no one else besides her or her brother could see.

For the remainder of the journey Nauriel barely spoke. It was clear that much was on her mind. She found it difficult to sleep and barely ate. She hated every day...every hour that she wasn't there in Gehenna. Along the way she thought about many things. She thought about her first memory of her parents when they came to visit her and Beren in Lothlorien....she thought about returning to Gehenna only to leave again a few years later. In all she had not spent much time in the village and with her family and for that she suddenly felt a tremendous amount of guilt. Of course she came to visit whenever she could, but now she wondered if that wasn't enough.

As the coaches finally pulled into the village she felt her apprehension grow. She was suddenly afraid to know the answer to the question that had been on her mind since reading her father's letter. Normally she would have smiled and waved to the people, but today she sat quietly. Finally, the coaches pulled up in front of the large manor which sat atop the highest hill in Gehenna. It was not the original house, which had been destroyed during the war, but was still by far the most beautiful house Nauriel had ever seen. The second the coach stopped Nauriel was up. Thankfully, Elessar knew she wouldn't want to wait for the footman and opened the door himself, much to the embarrassment of the footman. She took Elessar's hand, while holding Elfwine's basket in the other, forgetting that her father knew nothing yet of their newest family member. The moment her eyes were laid on her father she felt tears come to them. She felt Elessar take the basket from her so she could wrap her arms around her father. She buried her head against his chest as tears began to fall.

"...Is she...?" was all she could manage to ask with a trembling voice.

It had seemed like ages since he had seen his daughter and her family though not so long in reality for his daughter. He was so very proud of her and he was witness to the day she slain the Witch King of Angmar. He’d never forget that day. He remembered her as s little girl and to him she still was. He held her to him and murmured soothing tones. “She wanted to be here to greet you,” he said in a somewhat jovial tone. “I thought I’d have to tie her to the bed if she hadn’t relented. It is so good…” He continued and for just a moment she head his voice slip and his body nearly
shudder. “To see you daughter. I’ve missed you,” he told her softly. The girls exited their coach and then Elessar paused near theirs to give her time to greet her father.

Nauriel could tell despite his attempt at being jovial that things weren't good. She could tell how exhausted he was...clear sign that he wasn't sleeping, which meant he was truly worried. She began to wonder if he was eating.

"I've missed you too," she said quietly as she felt a few tears slip down her cheeks.

She finally pulled back after a moment and motioned for Arina and Kressara to come over to greet their grandfather. After they did she saw her father's eyes glance over at the basket, holding Elfwine. She explained to him briefly what had happened.

"Elessar and I have decided to adopt him and make him apart of our family."

OOC-You know I just remembered that Nauriel would have just been to Gehenna since she was on her way back when she found the slaughtered family and Elfwine. I guess maybe we can say she was actually heading there when she found the bodies and then turned around. Also, are we going to have Lindariel and Eomer be there at this point?

At the sight of the babe Conleth looked into the basket with the light of breast interest in his eyes. He had always loved his grandchildren. Each and everyone including his great grandchild Aslan. He actually smiled as Elfwine looked at him curiously. “He will raise Nauriel’s spirits for certain though just seeing you will anyway. Go inside Nauriel she is upstairs in our room,” he said and a servant opened the door for her. Others were inside to take any burdens she wanted to give them and Conleth greeted the King by clasping his forearm. “We in Gehenna are honored my King,” he said and bowed again. Elessar clasped his shoulder. He in fact was about 2 inches taller than Conleth. “Please Conleth...you are my father, it is my honor to be here,” he said in a deep, confident voice. “Grandfather!” The girls squealed and interrupted them by rushing up toward Conleth and hugging him. He released Elessar and bent down to hug them back. “Oh my lovely grand daughters...you get more beautiful each time I see you!” He said with delight. They swooned with his compliments and Elessar smiled and showed himself into the house after Nauriel.

Nauriel nodded and quickly walked into the manor. She could hear Eomer’s voice in the kitchen as well as Eldarion’s and assumed that Eldarion and Calista must have been in Rohan when news reached them about Serethiel. It gave her some comfort to know that her family was here. She walked up the stairs to the third floor where her parent’s grand suite was located. The entire third floor was just for them and contained a spacious bedroom, large bathroom with a copper soaking tub, a sitting room, and a smaller, private library. They also had a larger library down on the main level and loaned out books to people in the village on a regular basis.

As Nauriel reached the closed bedroom door she paused a moment and drew in a deep breath. Her mother would need her to be strong. She needed to be there entirely for her mother, and to not let her mother worry over her. Her mother had always been like that, even if she were injured, she worried about others. For a brief moment that thought made her smile. She then opened the door and walked in.

The room looked the same as she remembered. A nurse with braided, blonde hair nodded to her then, paused and curtsied, her pale blue dress spreading out around her. “My queen,” she said nervously then rose and stepped out closing the door behind her.

Her mother hadn’t looked toward the door but from Nauriel’s angle she saw she was awake and sitting up in her bed. It was Elfwine fussing that drew her attention toward her and her eyebrows raised in surprise. “I had hoped...I...Was hoping you’d come,” she said in a throaty voice. Tears began to form in her eyes and Nauriel saw the large thick bandages on her shoulder and arm. “If Conleth would let me from this bed, I’d have greeted you properly daughter,” she said with a bit more force this time.

As Nauriel walked in, she was greeted with the warm familiarity of the room. A fire was going in the fireplace and the curtains were open, letting in the afternoon sunlight. Nauriel walked further into the room with Elfwine’s basket in her hand. He was awake, but quiet. The moment her eyes laid upon her mother she felt tears fill them, despite the talk she had given herself outside the room. She regarded the nurse with a little nod of her head, but said nothing. All words left her as she looked at her mother. All her life her mother had been the strongest woman she had ever known, even stronger than Galadriel in her eyes. She’d heard tales of her bravery and strength and prowess with a bow. She had wanted to be like her...to have her strength and, most importantly, her heart. She knew that archery, besides her family, was everything to her. A bow was almost an extension of her arm. She remembered watching her and finding it strange that she could make such a deadly weapon appear so elegant at the same time. She had taken up the craft herself with hopes of one day being half as good as her. But now, in all likelihood, her mother would never use a bow again and the thought broke her heart.

She stood there a moment as tears continued to fill her eyes. She then put down the basket and walked quickly over to her and hugged her gently as tears began to slip down her cheeks.

“I’m so sorry I wasn’t here.”

Nauriel’s eyes scanned over her daughter. But it was the basket that drew her attention almost immediately. Her face took on a shocked look. She couldn’t have given birth to another child! She hadn’t even looked pregnant.

“Nauriel...is that...a baby? By the light I..I didn’t know,” she said now wondering if she had just not bothered to notice. However when Nauriel set the basket down she readied herself. Like all of her other grandchildren she’d hold this one as well and Conleth was nowhere around to stop her!

Nauriel pulled back and wiped the tears from her eyes. She then looked over at Elfwine and then back to her mother. She got up and picked him out of the basket and carried him back over to the bed. She sat on the edge with him cradled in her arms.

“He’s not mine by birth,” Nauriel explained, “but Elessar and I have adopted him and are going to raise him as our own. I found him when I was on my way here a few weeks ago. His entire family had been killed by raiders. He was no more than three weeks old and would not have lived much longer out there. Elessar and I did our best to find any other family he might have, but no one came forward. We have named him Elfwine.”

Serethiel could not stop her tears as she touched the babe. “Oh Nauriel...he’s beautiful!” She exclaimed and seemed to perk up. She could only use her right arm and even as she did she winced in pain. She leaned over and kissed Elfwine’s head. “Elfwine...he’s perfect Nauriel,” she said and smiled up at her. She cooed and played with his tiny hands. Their bond was as strong as ever and life seemed to draw into Serethiel as she tickled and reveled in the young life before her. After a few minutes she turned her attention back to Nauriel.

“I’m really alright daughter. My arm is not….” She began but decided to change the subject. “I heard young voices down stairs...did you bring my grand daughters with you?” She asked hopefully. “And your King of a husband?” She added.

Nauriel was glad to see her mother perk up as she touched Elfwine. He seemed perfectly relaxed and content to let her do so. All in all he was a very happy baby. He did not seem to cry as much as her other children had at his age. After she had lost her son, she and her father had come to Minas Tirith and had spent several weeks with her. Her mother had seen her at her absolute lowest and would know how much having Elfwine meant to her. Even if he was not her own blood, he had filled a hole that nothing else could fill.

“Calene remained back at the palace, but Arina, Kressara and Elessar are all here with me,” she replied. She gently caressed her son’s cheek for a moment before looking back at her mother. “Mother, I...I need your advice. It appears that Arina has been engaging in a secret relationship with a young soldier. I..caught them in an intimate position a few nights ago. They were just kissing...but she was in little more than her nightgown and a robe. Elessar sent him back to the city, but Arina is defiant against ending this relationship...or at least waiting until she is a little older. I have nothing against the fact that he is a soldier, but they have been carrying on in secret and I do not like the fact that he doesn’t seem to care that she is our daughter and this is entirely inappropriate. Arina says that she is in love with him...and perhaps she is...but I still don’t know what to do. My heart and my mind both say that she is still too young. Clearly she is still thinking like a child and behaving like one.”

Serethiel was touched by her daughter's arrival. She had brought her family with her and that alone made Serethiel feel better. However as she listened she began to remember her experiences raising their children. All of them were willful especially Lindariel who she had spoken to just a few hours ago.

“Arina will do what her heart tells her is right. She will jump long before her head manages to catch up with her body I think, from what you’ve told me. Little a parent can do save for turning them into a prisoner in their own home. However...and don’t take this the wrong way daughter, Arina is soft and ignorant of the world. A little hardship in her life would go a long way I think. But I doubt Elessar would go along with something like that and do what he can and keep this man away from her,” she explained. “Men and their daughters,” she chided in a tone that sounded as if they were powerless against the wants and needs of their little ladies. “We women are the ones that have to make the hard choices when it comes to what is best for our children,” she added as a moment of silence settled over them. Serethiel had had to make several hard choices for Nauriel and Beren.

Nauriel listened closely to what her mother had to say. She greatly valued her opinion still, even though she was a grown woman with grown children of her own. She knew in her heart that she was right about Arina. Although she and Elessar had done their best to instill good values in their children and try to make them understand about the hardships in the world, they still had grown up in a palace surrounded by servants and the finest things money could buy. Although Arina was of age to marry, Nauriel still viewed her as a child and in many ways she was. Should she chose to continue her relationship with this soldier there would be little she and Elessar could do to stop her, but she and Elessar would not support them financially. It broke her heart to think that it may come to that, but Arina would need to make a decision and then live with the results. And perhaps a little hardship would be good for her in the end.

“I cannot imagine doing what you did,” Nauriel said as she reached out to take her mother’s hand into her own. “You did what was best for Beren and myself...you gave us our best opportunities. Without learning what I did in Lothlorien I...I don’t think Elessar and I ever would have met. My life would be dramatically different. You are the strongest...most unselfish woman in all of Middle Earth.”

Serethiel ‘tisked’ at Nauriel’s compliment. She could remember times when she wasn’t particularly so selfless. But being married to Conleth had grounded her and settled her wander lust and thirst for vengeance. He built this house for her...twice and made it a home twice. No matter what he lost he still pressed forward doggedly.

“Nauriel this world needs good, strong leaders. Humans that have no evil to fight tend to make their own. Don’t let that be your future or that of your children. Elessar is a good man...Eomer as well but they are but two in a sea of men who would take all that they’ve built and burn it down because they know no other way. The blood of the Dunedain is waning and Arina must do her part to preserve it. The time for doing what she wants has to end and the greater good has to be preserved,” she said in a more serious manner. “

“I love my grand daughters and I would spare them all the pain and suffering of the world if I could but at some point they must take their rightful place or someone else will.”

Nauriel continued to hold her mother’s hand, even giving it a gentle, loving squeeze. She listened to her once again, but paused at her words. She was quiet a few long moments before finally speaking.

“Are you...are you suggesting that Elessar and I arrange a marriage for her and the rest of our daughters?”

Serethiel raised an eyebrow in disbelief.  “Nauriel!” She said in obvious annoyance.”I certainly do not! What I am saying is that the only ones that have known death and hardship are Eldarion and Laenaya. You, Beren and Lindariel left the comforts of our home long before you were really ready yet you all did so very well. Calene, Arina and Kassara like their comfy rooms and their bone china and their servants that wait on them from dusk til dawn. The world is much larger than Gondor daughter. Beyond the mountains, the King is only known by reputation. Most cities and towns have never seen him. Ask more of your daughters before they grow to used to their warm little nest. Send them as emissaries of the thrown that you fought so hard for,” Serethiel said.

Re: The Healing Begins

Serethiel spent the next half an hour just talking to her mother and letting her touch Elfwine. She then let the girls come up to visit with their grandmother while she went back downstairs. Her father and husband were engaged in a quiet conversation so she left them be and greeted her sister and brother-in-law. Eldarion and Calista were there as well and she hugged them both. Theodred had been left in full command of Rohan for the first time and Narisa remained behind as well due to her recent injuries. A few minutes later Aviana and Cole arrived with Aslan (with Beren and Ithilwen not too far behind). Elessar had not yet met his grandson and he was quick to go over to see him. Both Aviana and Elessar became a little teary eyed when he held his grandson for the first time.

Nauriel, Lindariel, and Ithilwen prepared dinner and then a thought occurred to Nauriel. She approached her husband, father, and brother and asked them if they would help to set up a table upstairs in the bedroom since it was difficult still for Serethiel to come downstairs. The table was set and the women brought up the food. Some sat at the table and some on chairs or on the floor, but Serethiel seemed overwhelmed with happiness at having her family with her. She gazed around at them all with some tears in her eyes. All of the pain she and Conleth had gone through and the hardships and believing for a long time that they would never have a child...and this was the reward...three strong children in powerful positions, and many beautiful grandchildren...and now a great grandson. It was far more than Serethiel ever could have hoped for.

It was well after dark when Nauriel and Elessar finally settled into their room. Because of Elfwine's needs they were staying with Cole and Aviana in their home. Arina and Kressara were staying in their grandparent's house and Lindariel and Eomer were remaining in the guest house. Nauriel looked over at her husband with a little smile as she readied herself for bed.

"Do you remember that little inn we stayed in the night we were married in that small village? We paid every extra coin we had just for one night...and then had to pay more in the morning because we had broken their bed."

OOC-I also had an idea possibly for Calene. I was thinking that maybe at some point she is kidnapped and taken out of Gondor. Neither Nauriel nor Elessar can go after her because of who they are, but maybe a stranger steps forward, who turns out to be half Dunedain, and volunteers to go find her. He doesn't know Calene personally, but he is an expert tracker and swordsman...maybe he isn't even from Gondor, but was just passing through at the time and heard about the kidnapping. He is older than Calene, but still young for a Dunedain, and he tracks her and the kidnappers down and rescues her and they almost immediately fall in love. But maybe he has other obligations and cannot stay in Minas Tirith with her, even though she begs him too. And so for a while she only sees him every so often and maybe even after they marry he still is frequently gone.

Or it could potentially be more interesting if there is an immediate attraction between them but they also argue. Maybe he sees her as just a spoiled princess (but is sexually attracted to her) until she surprises him somehow by showing him there is so much more to her

This time with his family was bitter sweet for Elessar. They didn’t have much time and he had held Aslan, his grandson for the first time. His guilt over Laenaya...he would use no other name to regard her, was renewed when he heard her stories and held little Aslan in his arms. He wanted her back home but knew she could not go with them. Right or wrong her life was here with...Cole. He didn’t like the man though he really never tried to like him. Perhaps it was unfair but it was what it was and he would take no time now to change that.

That was where his thoughts were when Nauriel had addressed him. He snapped from his thoughts to gaze over at her as she put on her shift. The nightgown would come next he knew and right then he wanted to gaze upon her nakedness. He needed to feel like a man tonight. Not a King or anyone of import. Just a man who desired his woman.

“Take that off and let me look at you in the moonlight,” he said in a soft but firm voice. He did indeed remember that Inn. He remembered everything they had done together since the moment they met.

Nauriel paused in what she was doing and looked over at her husband. He looked older, but still strong and as handsome as ever. She felt a wave of passionate love sweep through her. At his request, she stood and while looking at him she pulled the shift up over her head and then let it drop to the floor. Nauriel was still quite beautiful and despite having given birth to five children her body was still strong and well defined.
